Welcome to the Fall 2023 Issue of
IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine!
I
In keeping with the tradition initiated
in 2017, the theme of the fourth issue
in the 15th year of the magazine is
" Women in Circuits. " The guest editor
for this issue is Qun Jane Gu, who
has curated five contributions from
female leaders in the IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Society (SSCS). The objective
of the " Women in Circuits " issues is to
actively promote diversity within the
SSCS. This initiative aims to inspire
younger readers, enhance the career
advancement of female members,
and encourage broader participation
while increasing the visibility of
women in the SSCS.
The first featured article in this
issue was authored by Milin Zhang
and her team [A1]. Zhang is an associate
professor in the Department of
Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua
University. Zhang's research explores
nontraditional imaging sensors
and their biomedical applications.
Zhang's article focuses on the development
of wireless compact neural
interfaces for freely moving animals.
Yaoyao Jia was invited to contribute
the second feature article [A2],
which also centers on the biomedical
field. Jia is an assistant professor
with the Department of Electrical
and Computer Engineering, University
of Texas at Austin, where Jia's
research spans topics such as analog
and mixed-signal integrated circuits,
the Internet of Medical Things, and
implantable biomedical devices, neural
interface implants, and wearable

devices. Jia's article in this issue discusses
implantable medical devices
for wireless optical neuromodulation
and neural recording.
The third article, penned by Mahsa
Shoaran [A3], focuses on the biomedical
field as well and discusses
next-generation closed-loop neural
interfaces.
Shoaran is an assistant
professor in electrical engineering
and Neuro-X, serving as the director
of the Integrated Neurotechnologies
Laboratory at EPFL, where Shoaran researches
low-power mixed-signal IC
design for neural interfaces, machine
learning SoCs, and neuromodulation
therapies for neurological disorders.
The fourth featured article, by
Carolina Mora Lopez et al. [A4], provides
an overview of the fundamental
operation, design considerations, and
performance limitations of picowattlevel
CMOS and voltage references
for biomedical and sustainable IoT
systems. Lopez, the scientific director
and team leader of the circuits
for neural interfaces team at imec,
is the lead author, whose research
interests include analog and mixedsignal
circuit design for sensors, bioelectronics,
and neural interfaces.
The final feature of this issue
is contributed by Ann Concannon
[A5], a distinguished member of the
technical staff at Texas Instruments.
Concannon's article highlights the
evolution of ESD-robust designs for
integrated circuits. Concannon collaborates
with technology development
teams, design teams, and
external customers on various ESD
challenges for various projects.

Our aspiration is that this issue
will serve as an inspiration for the
next generation of women pursuing
engineering careers!
Furthermore, this issue includes
the always-popular columns by Ali
Sheikholeslami, Behzad Razavi, and
Chris Mangelsdorf. Sheikholeslami's
" Circuit Intuitions " column [A6] provides
a fresh perspective on Tellegen's
theorem and leverages the
conservation of energy principle to
intuitively confirm this theorem.
Razavi's " The Analog Mind " column
[A7] demonstrates the design of
phase interpolators, which find applications
in CDR systems and beamformers.
Mangelsdorf's " Shop Talk:
What You Didn't Learn in School "
column [A8] revisits the often-overlooked
information concealed in the
phase portion of a signal's FFT and
explores its utility in identifying imperfections
in analog circuits.
The goal of the magazine continues
to be to provide Society news
and information as well as a series
of self-contained resources to keep
the SSCS members up to date with
changes in technology while, at the
same time, providing reviews of circuit
design concepts. This includes
contributions from experts describing
the current state of affairs and the
evolution of a particular IC technology.
We will also continue to feature
articles focused on the contributions
of luminaries and solid-state circuit
techniques and directions.
