transceiver.
The seminar had 98 attendees: 29 in
person and 69 online. Attendees highly
valued the cutting-edge research presentations
and actively engaged in
post-presentation discussions.

SSCS Egypt Chapter Online Webinar and Summer 2023 Competition
Prof. Qun Jane Gu from the University
of California, Davis (UC Davis)
presented an online webinar to the
SSCS Egypt Chapter on 24 May 2023
(Figure 1). In this talk, she presented
her research activities in the terahertz
interconnect (TI) field, including
THz silicon waveguide channel
development, TI system demonstration,
dispersion-constrained link bandwidth,
and mitigation schemes such
as mode division and frequency
division multiplexing-based channelization.
The webinar was organized
by Dr. Dina Reda El-Damak
from the German University in Cairo
and Prof. Sameh Ibrahim from Ain
Shams University. The webinar was
attended by IEEE SSCS members and
industry members from Egypt.
Gu received her Ph.D. degree
from the University of California,
Los Angeles in 2007. After a couple
of years of industry experience, she
started her academic career in 2010
at the University of Florida. Since
2012, she has been with UC Davis,
where she is currently a professor.
Gu's group is passionate about highperformance
RF, mm-wave, and
terahertz integrated circuits and
systems. The works from her group
have won nine best paper awards
from international conferences. She
has received the 2013 NSF CAREER
Award, the 2015 UC Davis Outstanding
Junior Faculty Award, and the
Digital Object Identifier 10.1109/MSSC.2023.3314035

of the SSCS conferences RFIC,

for the
competition ended
on 25 July, and
the deadline for
submitting the
designs was
15 September.
The SSCS Egypt Chapter also organized
the Summer 2023 Competition
(Figure 2). The competition aims to
enhance the circuit design skills of
undergraduate students in Egypt by
having them do circuit design while

port and mentoring. Additionally,
another goal is to encourage student
participation in the Chapter and IEEE
activities in general.
The students are required to design
and simulate a fully differential operational
transconductance amplifier
(OTA) and a common-mode feedback
circuit. The OTA designs will be compared
based on a specific figure of
merit. Monetary awards will be provided
for the top two designs. The
registration for the competition ended
on 25 July, and the deadline for submitting
the designs was 15 September.
The winners were announced on 30
September 2023.
