San Diego Chapter Hosts Three DLs in the First Half of 2023
The San Diego SSCS/APS/CASS/EDS/
MTTS Joint Chapter hosted three DL
seminars in the first half of 2023,
offering a mix of in-person and virtual
delivery. Special thanks to Qualcomm
for hosting the in-person events.
On 4 January, Prof. Xing Zhou from
the Nanyang Technological University
(Singapore) delivered a webinar
titled " Monolithic Co-Integration of
III-V Materials Into Foundry Si-CMOS
in a Single Chip for Novel Integrated
Circuits " to an online audience of 32.
He proposed technology CAD work
that integrates III-V layers into conventional
CMOS. He also presented
the development of unified compact

models for generic GaN/InGaAsbased
HEMTs for future heterogeneous
ICs.
On 9 June, Prof. Joseph Bardin
from the University of Massachusetts
gave a tutorial titled " Quantum Computing:
What Is It, How Does It Work,
and What Are the Opportunities for
Microwave Engineers? " . Coming with
academic and industrial experience,
Bardin covered the basics of quantum
computing and shared balanced
and realistic prospects of this technology
with an in-person crowd of
80. He revealed the duality between
quantum computing and microwave
concepts, highlighting where they
can intersect. Following the talk, the
Chapter hosted a lunch in Del Mar
for Bardin.
On 23 June, we hosted two SSCS
celebrities from the SSCS Commemorative
Lecturers roster (established
by Chapters Chair Alvin Loke) for
an in-person double feature to commemorate
the 75th anniversary of
the transistor (Figure 1). Prof. Tom
Lee from Stanford University and
Dr. Chris Mangelsdorf, who retired
from Analog Devices, presented very
entertaining and insightful back-toback
talks, respectively titled " From
Rocks to Chips: Stories of the Transistor "
and " Don't Try This With CMOS! "
(Figure 2). Known for his penchant
for consuming huge volumes of lowcalorie
colas, Lee narrated the nonlinear
story of the humble beginnings
of the semiconductor, leading to the
eventual invention of the transistor.
