Turkey, was the guest of the Hong
Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the SSCS Hong

lecture about recent advances in
polar coding. Prof. Arikan first discussed a 22-nm, application-specific
IC implementation of polar codes for
use cases targeting terabit-per-second data rates. He also talked about

with Student Members. In 2019, the
Chapter held many exciting events
and invited a wide array of academic
and industrial experts.
On 3 May 2019, the Chapter
cohosted Distinguished Lecturer
Prof. Steven P. DenBaars, University of California, Santa Barbara

Development of InGaN/GaN-Based
Laser Diodes for Energy-Efficient
Solid-State Lighting and Displays."
Prof. DenBaars shared the latest
research progress on reducing the
loss from free-carrier absorption
in gallium nitride (GaN)-based laser
diodes and envisioned the application of GaN-based lasers in various areas, such as cinema, lidar for
autonomous driving, augmented reality, and light-fidelity networks using
GaN-based laser diodes with high
efficiency, power, bandwidth, and
integration density. Faculty members and research students enjoyed
an educational and inspiring talk
about state-of-art achievements in
GaN-based lasers and micro-LEDs.

a new type of code that combines
convolutional coding with channel
polarization to achieve near-optimal
performance while still being practically implementable. A number
of open research problems were
also presented. After the lecture,
Prof. Arikan visited the HKUST-
Qualcomm Optical Wireless L ab
and shared his research advice
with students.
