Welcome to the Spring 2021 Issue of
IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine!
T
The focus of this second issue of the
13th year of IEEE Solid-State Circuits
Magazine is on a less-common but
increasingly important variety, i.e.,
" flavor, " of integrated circuits, i.e.,
" chips. " The chip flavor of this issue
is cryogenically cooled circuits. While
such circuits still fall in a niche category
of otherwise ubiquitous integrated
circuits found just about
everywhere, cryogenic circuits date
back to the early 1950s. Cryogenic
amplifiers were initially conceived
of to address challenges in the
fields of space exploration and radio
astronomy, but they now are widely
investigated for other applications,
most notably quantum computing.
The guest editor, Joseph Bardin,
has authored and invited other contributors-Davide
Braga, Shaorui Li,
Farah Fahim, Bogdan Staszewski,
Imran Bashir, Elena Blokhina, Dirk
Leipold, and Edoardo Charbon-to
provide articles describing cryogenic
circuits for diverse areas: radio

In addition to the always-popular
editorials/tutorials from Ali Sheikholeslami
and Behzad Razavi, this
issue also introduces a series titled
" Shop Talk " by Chris Mangelsdorf.
The new series intends to provide
practical, undocumented tricks that
are not taught in schools but are
used extensively by industry pros.
To make this series interactive,
relevant, and also
entertaining, readers' participation
is encouraged.
In this issue, Ali's " Circuit
Intuitions " column
discusses methods of
finding the equivalent
impedance seen when
looking into a pair of
nodes, Behzad's " The
