How Behzad Razavi has educated the
microelectronics community

ehzad Razavi is
known to almost
anyone who starts
post-high-school
education in electrical
engineering. Through eight
universally adopted books and hundreds
of papers, his impact on circuits
education is immediately felt
at all levels, from undergraduate
sophomores all the way to Ph.D. students
and practicing engineers.
A Unique Ability to Describe
Difficult Concepts
I was first exposed to Razavi's book
Principles of Data Conversion System
Design in 1996, when I started
my Ph.D. studies. What I noticed

right from the start was how easily
the book could be read. The
chapters were well organized, the
writing style was persuasive, and
the descriptions were clear. Moreover,
what was noticeable was that
all circuit schematics impressively
used a consistent and complete set
of symbols. To me, the effort spent
to produce esthetic figures was a
big contributing factor, alongside
the great writing style, in keeping
me engaged and motivating me to
read the book from the beginning
to the end, just like a novel. His
subsequent books, RF Microelectronics
and Design of Analog CMOS
Integrated Circuits, followed these
great practices, as well. The former
was published around the time that
radio-frequency (RF) ICs had just
started to pick up, and, therefore, it
became a guiding reference for circuit
designers. Showcased in these
books are Razavi's methodical approach
and his unique ability to
describe often difficult concepts in
an intuitive language while maintaining
depth and rigor. Looking at
journal and conference papers in
our field, we can see that Razavi's
writing style and elegant circuit illustrations
have influenced countless
people.
One of the True Analog
Design Masters
My sentiments have been repeated
by many experts in the field. Samuel
Palermo, a professor of electrical
engineering at Texas A&M University,
