Summary of Activities of San Diego Chapter
In 2022, the San Diego SSCS Chapter
hosted four online webinars and
two in-person seminars. The former
drew a total attendance of more than
200, while the latter was about 20.
We started the year on 10 January
with James C. Rautio, founder
and board chair of Sonnet Software,
in Syracuse, New York. Rautio
presented " Maxwell's Theory for
Us Regular Folks. " Rautio aimed to
have a presentation giving a physical
understanding of Maxwell's theory,
with no equations at all. With
a few simple animations (intended
to inform rather than impress)
and interspersed with bits of " dad "
humor, Raut io explained Maxwell's
theory with a precious view
through a window into the incredibly
amazing and beautiful universe
of Maxwell's theory. Rautio

Shekhar discussed silicon
photonics from the ground
up. The talk started with
complementary metaloxide
semiconductor
(CMOS) processes and
how it is possible to
incorporate photonic
devices. Shekhar discussed
where the light is guided in
a silicon waveguide on a CMOS semiconductor
on insulator process, and

of what the light
options are.
what a significant impact silicon
photonics have in the field of highspeed
transceivers for data communications.
Which applications will
become mainstream in the next 5 to

add photonics to
the arsenal of the
CMOS designer and
make its adopt ion
photonics, the talk
was an excellent
seamless? Shekhar
highlighted the opportunities
that lie ahead
for a CMOS designer in
adopting this technology,
now ready to be deployed.
Diving deep into
the different elements of
photonics, the talk was an
excellent introduction to the topic,
with good intuition and understanding
of what the light options are.
