Grosinger presented RF design solutions
for wireless sensor nodes targeting
the Internet of Things (IoT).
Engineers can apply these RF design
solutions to improve the ultralowpower
operation of IoT nodes, avoid
batteries' eco-toxicity, and decrease
maintenance costs due to battery
replacement. Moreover, Grosinger
discussed solutions for ultralowpower
wireless communication systems
using RF identification technologies.
Passive miniaturized IoT
nodes, batteryless, or rather passive
IoT nodes, which provide passive
sensing capabilities, can work
robustly in their respective application
environment.
The year ended with an in-person
talk, " Circuits and Technologies for
Implantable Biomedical Devices, " presented
by Carolina Mora Lopez, from
Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre,
Leuven, Belgium. With semiconductor
technology innovations, much
recent work has been focused on unraveling
biological complexity, but
also on driving new diagnoses, treatments,
and therapies that are tailored
to the individual. One of the drivers
behind those innovations are novel
CMOS circuits enabling multimodal,
high-precision data collection, and
analysis at ultralow power consumption.
In this talk, Lopez presented
recent biomedical developments
based on silicon technology, and discussed
the requirements, materials,
circuit techniques, and design challenges
of their application-specific
integrated circuit (ASIC) and system
on a chip platforms. Using basic analog
elements to build up complex,
repeatable biomedical systems,
this opens a new avenue for system
integration for circuit designers.
And on top of that, the integrated
systems, on the same chip or with
a system in package, satisfies biomedical
needs. Arrays of structures
can be obtained, thanks to the very

large scale of ASICs with very low
cost. After the talk, chapter officers
had a lunch with the speaker in Del
Mar, where we shared our gratitude
with Lopez.
Figure 1 summarizes the activities
we had.
Special thanks to Hasnain Lakdawala
and Qualcomm Inc. for
hosting the in-person events. They
secured the avenue in both talks.
It was also observed that in- person
events get little attraction from audiences.
With the convenience of online
webinars, starting because of the
advent of COVID, the chapter officers
are discussing what our options are
and how we can motivate audiences
to come back to in-person events. We
are also thinking of using a hybrid
approach and gauging how members
are going to react to that.
