In Step With Kathy Wilcox
Making Waves as a New AdCom Member-at-Large

Dr. Kathryn (Kathy) Wilcox has worked
on high-performance microprocessors
for most of her career. Starting as a
co-op at Digital Equipment Corporation, her first assignment was to
port a floating-point chip into a 1-µm
CMOS process.
"I really enjoyed the people I
worked with and the challenge of
designing and verifying the circuits,"
Kathy said. When she joined Digital Equipment Corporation full time,
Kathy worked on Alpha processor
chips (EV3, EV4, EV45, EV6, and EV8) as
well as various sections of the processor in different generations of chips,
including instruction fetch, instruction cache, and execution units. Kathy
found that there were interesting
challenges in terms of high frequencies (200 MHz for EV4) and the first
Alpha out-of-order instruction design
(EV6). Part of her professional path led
to the network processor field, which
had its own unique set of design hurdles. Throughout her career, she has
utilized and influenced the optimal
methods of ever-increasing tool automation to deliver best-in-class chips.

Kathy currently is a fellow with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) as part
of the central processing unit (CPU)
Core Team in Boxborough, Massachu-

setts. After initially joining AMD in
2003, she did custom work for a number
of years on the floating point register
file and was leader of the team responsible for the core custom designs of
multiple projects. Kathy is currently
focused on early technology bringup, including test-chip enablement,
standard (std)-cell library design and
evaluation, routing trials, and std-cell
design-environment planning, development, and testing.
For the past several years, Kathy has
worked with Global Foundries on
7-nm design technology co-optimization. The group there looked at
different std-cell designs, as well as the
impact of different std-cell architectures and routing options, with the goal
of achieving the highest frequency
and lowest power in designs. Kathy
