DLs Mercier and Wang Deliver IEEE SSCS Seminars in San Diego

This past quarter, the IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Society (SSCS) Webinar Program and the SSCS San Diego Chapter
hosted two SSCS Distinguished Lecturer (DL) seminars at the Qualcomm
campus in San Diego, California.
On 2 May 2019, Prof. Patrick Mercier from the University of California, San Diego, presented the seminar "Ultra-Low-Power Integrated
Circuits and Physiochemical Sensors
for Next-Generation Unawearables."
Although wearable devices hold tremendous promise to diagnose, monitor, and treat medical conditions
as well as track the real-time status
of athletes, they have yet to realize
greater market potential because
they monitor only a limited number
of physical and electrophysiological
parameters and are large, bulky, and
rigid. Widespread adoption of wearables technology requires new sensors that provide more actionable
data in thin, flexible form factors;
support electronic infrastructure to
condition, digitize, and wirelessly
communicate data with extreme
energy efficiency; and provide better data analytics to extract more
useful information.

Mercier discussed emerging sensor technologies that could noninvasively monitor physiochemistry
(e.g., glucose, blood alcohol concentration, and lactate) in thin, flexible,

and energy-efficient wearable de vices. He also offered a brief look at
the analytics required to parse and
understand these data. He covered
