of Milan-Bicocca (Italy) Draw Large Participation

Regardless of the critical COVID-19
situation, the IEEE Solid-State Circuits
Society Italian Chapter organized
two Topics on Microelectronics
(ToM2021) courses: one held in May
and the other held in September in
collaboration with, respectively, the
Ph.D. course in physics and astronomy
at the University of Milan-Bicocca
(Italy) and the Cultural Association
InnoTechEvents.
This year, the 15th for the ToM
series, the courses were organized to
be held online. The first course was
held 25-27 May 2021, featuring the
following program:

Photonics Society Student Chapter Holds Virtual Events

The PES Institute of Technology Bangalore
Joint Chapter of the IEEE SolidState
Circuits Society (SSCS) and IEEE
Photonics Society held an orientation
program on 18 January 2021. This orientation
program is held every year
after the IEEE core team members
recruitment process. The mentors
for the event were Prof. Shashidhar
Tantry, Prof. Shreyus Gowtham, and
Dr. Kaustav Bhowmick. The newly recruited
core members were Haritha
Rajaram (chair), Mahima M. Rao (secDigital
Object Identifier 10.1109/MSSC.2021.3088819

retary), Prajwal YM (public relations
head), Tejas Raj G R (design head),
and Shruti Elangovan (treasurer). The
event was organized to recruit people
interested in solid-state circuits and
photonics and spread awareness of
the significance of the two Societies
among students.
During the event, the mentors
talked about how fascinating it is to
know that photonics combines physical
electronics with light. The way it
spans from the generation or emission
of light, through engineering
the manipulation of light for communications
and information processing,
to the detection of information
carried by light was especially interesting
to attendees. Solid-state electronics
and photonics range from the
design of VLSI circuits to the study
of the impact of a single layer of atoms
on the electronic properties of
a device.
Also covered is the study of light
emission from laser diodes, the design
of solar cells for converting optical
energy into electrical energy, the
engineering of novel electronic materials,
and the design of the processes
used for manufacturing ICs. The
event also highlighted the importance
of being a part of the IEEE family
and showed the various benefits
