mentioned in the " Switching Sequences
and DEM " section, DEM techniques
add pseudorandom noise, which can
be dominant for significant amounts
of mismatch.
For increasing output frequency
fout, the effect of clock jitter can become
the dominant contribution to
output noise [29], [30]. As depicted
in Figure 1(a), the instants of transition
from high to low (the falling
edge) and from low to high (the rising
edge) of the clock at frequency
fs are subject to random time errors,
known as clock jitter [1], [2]. As one
of these two edges determines the
start of the conversion cycle (and
the end of the previous one), then
this time error affects the output
waveform by slightly abbreviating or
extending it (and anticipating/delaying
the next cycle). This causes an
additional noise contribution to the
output [29], [30].
Although this effect is reminiscent
of the well-known aperture
sampling error in sample-and-hold
circuits [1], there are some commonalities
and differences. In both
cases, jitter-induced noise power
is proportional to the square of the
signal amplitude, its frequency, and
root-mean-square jitter
[29], [30].
However, the error mechanisms are
different. In the case of sampling
a continuous-time waveform, the
sampling-time error causes an error
on the sampled voltage value.
Specifically, it leads to an amplitude
error. Although in the case of
