TL: What got you interested in
being an electrical engineer?
TM: I always liked computers.
When I was a teen, personal computers
were emerging. I started
writing little programs on my first
computer, an Apple IIc, and quickly
decided as a high school freshman
that this was my love and what I
wanted to study.
TL: Why did you decide to start
working in industry after graduation?
TM:
I wanted to work on products.
I didn't get the research bug to
want to pursue a Ph.D. When I was
in school, I worked on GPS receivers
at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
[in Pasadena, CA]. I got the taste of
what it was like to design stuff, and
I really liked that.
TL: What made you decide to
change career directions to be a
high school teacher?
TM: I just wanted to work with
kids. I like working with young energetic
people like yourself who are
interested in this technology and
want to do cool things. I was kind
of disheartened when we tried to
hire engineers into Qualcomm but
couldn't find qualified engineers.
We ended up opening facilities overseas.
My feeling was that if I could
make a difference, I would do it in
the classroom, to get kids like you
interested in this field in hopes that
you'd want to pursue it.
TL: Do you see a bright future in
studying electronics?
TM: Definitely. And furthermore,
the COVID pandemic, chip supply
chain shortages, and concentration of
manufacturing in East Asia have additionally
heightened national security
concerns here in the [United States],
triggering even more demand. We
will have a serious shortfall of electrical
engineers in the next few years
that will last for a long time. Demand
for hardware engineers is going to be
huge, much more so than for software
engineers!
TL: It seems like many students
are pursuing computer science and
software after high school. What is
your take on this?
