Welcome to the Summer 2023 Issue of
IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine!

The third issue of the 15th year of
IEEE Solid-State Circuits Magazine is
dedicated to the 75th anniversary of
the invention of the transistor. We cannot
underestimate the impact that
transistors have had on our lives.
Every member of the Solid-State Circuits
Society (SSCS) utilizes, studies,
enhances, and/or innovates smaller
circuits and larger systems made possible
by transistors. The multitude
of gadgets that encompass our lives
would be unimaginable without the
existence of transistors. These tiny
components, invisible to the naked
eye, have remarkably transformed our
lives far beyond the wildest dreams
of their original inventors.
Our guest editor, Alvin Loke, played
a pivotal role in organizing this issue
of the magazine. He assembled an
impressive team of authors who have
provided insightful overviews on the
evolution of transistors, transistor
modeling, and prominent circuit categories
as well as a glimpse into the
future trajectory of transistors in the
coming decades. Commencing with
Auth and Shankar's article [A1], this
issue delves into the fascinating journey
of transistor evolution. Nagel and
McAndrew [A2] follow with their piece
on transistor modeling. The subsequent
four articles cover diverse
circuit categories: digital circuits
(Ikeda [A3]); analog circuits (Chae et al.
[A4]); memory technologies (Chang
et al. [A5]); and RF circuits (Razavi [A6]).

of the respective category's development.
Concluding the issue, Collaert's
article [A7] presents reflections on
future trends in transistor development.
The guest editorial written by
Loke [A8] provides more details on
these seven articles. While these articles
cannot encapsulate the entirety
of the past 75 years nor cover other
vital fields (for example, imaging,
artificial intelligence, radar, etc.), they
offer readers historical perspectives
and hint at what lies ahead.
As always, we are happy to present
the always-popular editorials/
tutorials from Ali Sheikholeslami [A9]
and Chris Mangelsdorf [A10]. In this
issue, Ali's " Circuit Intuitions " column
is dedicated to the fourth installment
on source followers. Chris's tutorial
investigates circuits and techniques
for improving power-supply rejection
ratios (PSRRs).
The goal of the magazine continues
to be to provide Society news
and information as well as a series
of self-contained resources to keep
SSCS members up to date with changes
in technology while, at the same
time, providing reviews of circuit
design concepts. This includes contributions
from experts describing
the current state of affairs and the
evolution of a particular IC technology.
We will also continue to feature
articles focused on the contributions
of luminaries and solid-state circuit
techniques and directions.
