Back-to-Back SSCS Distinguished Lectures by
Mingoo Seok in Singapore
The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society
(SSCS) Singapore Chapter held two
back-to-back Distinguished Lectures
on 17 April 2023 at the Institute of
Microelectronics (IME), Agency for
Science, Technology and Research
(A*STAR). Associate Prof. Mingoo
Seok from Columbia University gave
both lectures: " Review, Survey, and
Benchmark of Recent Digital LDO
Voltage Regulators " and " SRAMBased
In-Memory Computing Hardware:
Analog Versus Digital and
Macros to Microprocessors. " More
than 35 participants from industry,
research, and academic communities
attended Prof. Seok's lectures.
In his first presentation, Prof.
Seok gave comprehensive comparisons
between the ubiquitous analogbased
LDO and the emerging digital
LDO (Figure 1). He then proceeded to
deliver a review of the digital LDO
design architecture through five
main design aspects: control laws,
triggering methods, power-FET circuit
design, digital-analog hybridization,
and single versus distributed
architectures. Within each design
aspect, he gave a very detailed analysis
of the various circuit techniques
used to achieve good LDO performance
along with their shortcomings.
In addition, he offered a new
figure of merit (FOM), the pC-FOM, to
address the shortcomings of the previously
proposed FOMs (Figure 2).
Prof. Seok then used a pC-FOM benchmark
to give us valuable insights

into which design techniques contribute
to better dynamic load regulation
performance.
The audience was receptive to
Prof. Seok's lecture. Attendees asked
many insightful questions and were
interested in Prof. Seok's research.
In his second lecture, Prof.
Seok presented a talk titled " SRAMBased
In-Memory Computing Hardware:
Analog Versus Digital and
Macros to Microprocessors " (Figure 3).
More than 30 participants from
industry, research, and academic
communities attended Prof. Seok's
lecture (Figure 4).
Prof. Seok started his lecture by
giving an overview of existing computer
architectures, how the great
memory wall limits neural network
compute performance, and the rationale
of in-memory computing in
breaking down the great memory
wall. Prof. Seok then presented the
