This past quarter, the IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Society (SSCS) Webinar Program
and San Diego SSCS Chapter hosted
three seminars at the Qualcomm campus in San Diego, California.
On 8 August 2019, Dr. Seung Kang
from Qualcomm delivered his seminar
"Emerging Memories and Pathfinding
for the Era of Sub-10-nm System-onChip." He presented a broad overview
of phase-change memory, magnetoresistive random-access memory (RAM),
resistive RAM, and ferroelectric RAM
from the perspectives of device, design,
integration, reliability, and applications. Kang also provided insights on
the potential incorporation of these
emerging technologies in the Internet
of Things, security, automotive, and
machine-learning space.
On 23 August 2019, SSCS Education
Chair and Distinguished Lecturer Prof.
Ali Sheikholeslami from the University
of Toronto delivered a fundamentals
seminar, "Basics of Jitter in Wireline
Communications." Sheikholeslami
reviewed the basic definitions of jitter and its properties, the relationship
between jitter and phase noise, and the
effects of jitter on a wireline system. He
then described jitter transfer, generation, and tolerance and the methods
for characterizing, modeling, and simulating jitter before covering his recent
work on jitter measurement and mitigation techniques. Sheikholeslami also
gave an afternoon lecture at the University of California, San Diego, "Circuit
Intuitions: Looking Into a Node," based
on his quarterly contributions to IEEE
Solid-State Circuits Magazine. The talk
was hosted by Prof. Ian Galton.
On 30 August 2019, Prof. Firooz
Aflatouni visited from the University
of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, to present "Electronic-Photonic Co-Design:
From Communication to Optical Phase
Control." He made the case for an

integrated electronic-photonic codesign and how it can profoundly
impact data communication, signal
processing, imaging, and sensing.
Examples of such a co-design may be

categorized into two groups: electronicassisted photonics, where integrated
analog, radio frequency (RF), millimeterwave (mm-wave), and terahertz (THz)
circuits are employed to improve the
