injection, and background calibration function.
Recently, SAR ADCs integrating delta-sigma noise shaping have
become a popular topic, and many
high-performance ADCs based on new
structures have been implemented.
Sun reviewed earlier designs and
divided this technology into two categories: 1) delta-sigma ADCs using an
SAR quantizer and 2) SAR ADCs with

noise-shaping capability. SAR is suitable to act as a quantizer but must
meet the system's speed requirements. Sun provided a few design
examples illustrating how to achieve
noise shaping in SAR ADCs.
Sun concluded by considering mismatch error. Mismatch is a generic
problem in feedback digital-to-analog
converters. If used smartly, a dynamic
element-matching structure even supplies noise shaping.

Sun's talk attracted 60 participants
from industry, research institutions,
and the academic community, including Broadcom, Infineon, Media Tek,
IME, the National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological
University. Audience members were
very interested in the topic and many
asked questions.

IEEE SSCS Poland Chapter Connects Engineers
Through Technical Talks

The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society
(SSCS) Poland Chapter coorganized
and hosted several interesting events
at the AGH University of Science and
Technology, Kraków. The sessions
brought together many young people
from throughout Poland; they focused
on microelectronic circuit design and
enhancing the quality of microelectronics teaching.

On 9-11 April 2019, Willy Sansen
(Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium) joined Randy Caplan (Silicon
Creations) to deliver a series of lectures on different aspects of microelectronic circuit design. The presenters introduced phase-locked-loop
design and discussed the noise performance of transistor stages, stability of operational amplifiers and their
configurations, offset and commonmode rejection ratio effects, and bandgap circuits. More than 120 people

attended this event, including not only
AGH students in the microelectronics
branch but also employees of Silicon
Creations as well as those of research
institutes and microelectronics companies throughout Poland.
On 30-31 July, more than 80 people
attended a two-day course taught by
Dr. Charvaka Duvvury on the basics,
circuits, and techniques of electrostatic
discharge (ESD). ESD phenomena are
essential for successful microelectronic
product design, and circuit robustness
