such as " if you don't have time to do
it right, make sure you leave time
to do it over. " Rolled into one package, Paul proved to be a genius with
an approachable humility. This was
a perfect set of skills to bring to the
emerging technology of analog
semiconductor integration, where
there were far more questions than
answers, and most of " the book " was
yet to be written.
These were the early days of analog
design, and there was much work to
be done on the fundamental building
blocks. Paul is best known for his work
around temperature transducers and
voltage references. He built on Widlar's
work on the " Si bandgap " to introduce
the improved bandgap reference
that ultimately became known as the
" Brokaw bandgap cell " [1974 International Solid-State Circuits Conference
(ISSCC) and Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC) papers-see " Examples of
Paul Brokaw's Significant Publications,
Patents, and So Forth " ]. This robust
bandgap technology provided reference and bias structures that could be
implemented on supplies of 5 V and
below (Zener-based reference structures often required supply voltages of
over 9 V). Bandgap structures based on
Brokaw's approach quickly became the
dominant reference and bias sources
for analog and mixed signal circuits.
This continued to be the case through
the analog transition from bipolar to
CMOS technologies that would come
15 years later. His bandgap configuration has proven to be one of the
most durable circuit topologies in IC
design. The Brokaw bandgap structure
and its descendants continue to be
the primary bias and reference structures used today, 45 years after his
ISSCC paper. As Paul's colleague Chris
Mangelsdorf noted, it is hard to find
an analog IC designer who has not utilized this structure somewhere in his
or her designs.
Over the years, Paul continued to
develop refinements like curvature correction and other techniques to improve
the accuracy, temperature stability, and
versatility of these circuits. His papers
and patents exploited a deep understanding of the devices' characteristics
to provide elegant approaches that
compensate for second- and even thirdorder effects, often without adding any
additional devices. Again, these inventions were based on a combination of a
profound knowledge of semiconductor
physics and a creative approach to circuit topology. One could observe that
Paul put enormous work into the " pursuit of nothing, " which is a reference
voltage that would stay constant in the
face of temperature, stress, load, and
supply voltage. He once quipped that a
voltage reference data sheet really only
had one specification (the output voltage) and everything else was apologies
and excuses.
