Our National Taiwan University
(NTU)-MediaTek Wireless Lab and NTU
Hospital (NTUH)-MediaTek Medical
Electronics Lab built close interactions
with labs at the Tokyo Institute of
Technology (TITECH) since the late
1990s before the IEEE Solid-State Circuit
Society (SSCS) was established.
Therefore, I witnessed Prof. Matsuzawa's
successful accomplishments in
both research and teaching during his
academic career at TITECH from 2003
to 2018. Although Prof. Matsuzawa's
achievements and contributions to
analog-to-digital convertors (ADCs) for
many digital video systems were well
recognized when he worked for Panasonic
(1978-2003), his startup endeavors
in exploratory mm-wave wireless
communication using state-of-the-art
CMOS technology should be a successful
milestone that characterizes his
dedication to academia after he joined
TITECH in 2003.
We learned that Prof. Matsuzawa's
lab (Matsuzawa & Okada lab will be
abbreviated as Matsuzawa Lab) launched
a " Millimeter-Wave CMOS Transceivers "
program at NTU-TITECH joint
research seminar at TITECH in 2010

" Low-Power Low-Cost 60 GHz Transceivers. "
Prof. Matsuzawa's initiative
was an R&D program supported by
the Ministry of Internal Affairs and
Communications of Japan for expansion
of radio spectrum resources. An
essential feature of this TITECH program
that differentiates the rest of
the leading research organizations on
CMOS 60-GHz programs is a feasible
university academic/research collaboration
with industry and government.
The industry in Japan [including
Japan Radio Corporation (JRC), NEC,
SONY, Toshiba, Panasonic, Fujitsu lab,
and Amsys] provided the program
with each of its unique component
and specialization. The project built a
prototype transceiver first to test and
evaluate the mm-wave communication
system. The transceiver was also used
to measure the field channel model
for the link budget design of the mmwave
CMOS transceiver. The participating
companies (such as Panasonic,
