Virtually at ESSCIRC/ESSDERC 2021
This year, the annual mentoring event
at the IEEE 2021 European Solid-State
Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC)/European
Solid-State Device Research
Conference (ESSDERC) was held virtually
on the GatherTown platform.
The event was held on 16 September
2021. The mentoring session was
sponsored by the IEEE Solid-State
Circuits Society (SSCS) Young ProfesDigital

sionals, the SSCS Women in Circuits
Committee, and the IEEE Electronic Devices
Society (EDS).
The event opened with a brief
presentation of SSCS and EDS benefits.
Attendees then had the opportunity
to move from room to room
based on the topics in which they
were interested, similar to the concept
of breakout rooms. Topics included
mentoring and networking
in the virtual world, the new work/
life balance, the how-to for a virtual
job search, on the way to tenure, becoming
a professor, how to become
a leader, career/self-development,
communication skills/negotiation,
and a career in industry/start-ups.
The GatherTown platform allowed
the mentoring session attendees to
interact via webcam and audio, making
the event a little more intimate.
