Advances in
Wireless Power Coils
The key element
in a wireless
power charging
system

ireless power technology is a rapidly
growing field. Many well-established
semiconductor manufacturing companies
have entered the field and added a new
category to their product tree, but wireless
power also has allowed new firms to introduce innovative
end products into the market. The key element in wireless
power charging systems is the wireless power coil; Würth
Elektronik (WE) has given its wireless power coil a proprietary name-the wireless power charging coil
(WPCC). WE has been very successful in representing
itself as one of the leading coil manufacturers and is
being recognized by designers at various semiconductor
companies as their first choice for coils.
What makes a WPCC superior is its performance and
quality, which are obviously driven by the innovative technology used in producing these coils. The electrical performance of the coil is rated by the amount of power it is able
to transfer to the receiver coil and the ability of the receiver to receive the power for the end use, such as charging a
battery or powering an electronic circuit. There are various parameters that affect power transfer using wireless
coils, such as the
■ quality factor
■ alternating current (ac) and direct current (dc) resistance
■ shape of the coil
■ size ratio between the transmitter and receiver coils
■ angle at which the two coils are placed
■ area where the winding is placed

■ distance between the coils for coupling.
To maximize the power transfer from the WPCC, the
basic material and its construction need to be altered.
Some advances made in these coils are the field-shaper
rim and magnetic plateau. They act like a magnetic flux
director to guide the produced flux in the right direction toward the receiver so that the receiver is able to receive most of the transferred power, and, therefore, the
maximum amount of power is transferred. This distinct
feature is confined mostly to the transmitter and places
where the thickness of the coil is not crucial. The downside is that they add additional thickness to the overall
size of a coil.
However, with carefully engineered composite-material-based ferrites in the shield of WPCC receivers,
