Software Defined Power allows the driver to drive
looking through the windshield, supported by a
crash avoidance system. A driver needs to constantly observe, predict, and react to the environment.
This is the same thing that a crash avoidance system
is essentially doing, but it does it significantly faster
and more accurately than a human.
The greatest initial returns for Software Defined
Power in the data center are between the UPS and
the rack. Layering on a level of intelligence that can
learn and adapt over time, VPS' Intelligent Control of
Energy (ICE) software polls the numerous monitoring points to analyze current and historical data to
create a profile to manage the overall system.
In order to achieve this first stage of integration,
Virtual Power Systems (VPS) has designed its own
energy injection hardware. The VPS ICE Stack is a
rack mount lithium-ion based energy storage device
that resides between the UPS and the rack. The primary purpose of these devices is to inject energy
into the infrastructure to limit load on upstream systems when needed.
The ICE solution allows the data center to dramatically reduce the overhead buffer, supplementing
energy from the ICE Stack when needed locally to
allow the buffers to shrink or be removed. This can
free up to 40 percent of that built-in buffer to be utilized in other areas (Figure 1). Energy injection also
protects the critical circuit breakers, adding greater
resiliency to the overall infrastructure. All of this is
dynamically managed via the ICE software.
In addition to power bursting, VPS also offers
Dynamic Power Management. Dynamic Power Management allows data centers the opportunity to shift
power reserved for redundancy to new customers at
a lower priority level. Through orchestration and ICE
Switch hardware, power is pulled from the redundant power that is sitting idle waiting for a failure.
While the system is fully operational with no infrastructure systems in a failure mode, the data center
