System Benefits
The loss reduction and efficiency
improvement based on GaN Systems'
traction inverter should interpret the
system benefits. There are two main
benefits for this traction inverter: one
is extending mileage and the other is
lowering system cost with the downsizing
of the cooling system and battery
capacity.
1) Ext ending mileage
As shown in sectio n 2, the average
efficiency of a GaN-based traction
inverter shows a 3% improvement,
which increases battery energy savings
and ultimately extending vehicle
mileage. Using the Tesla model
S as an example (weight: 2200 kg,
battery capacity: 75 kWh; Inverter
Max power: 200 kW; 400 V battery
system), the mileage can be estimated
based on two driving scenarios:
one with constant 60 km/hour
speed and on the WLTP Class 3b
driving cycle. Mileage is extended
6% to 10% with a GaN-based inverter
compared to conventional Si
