You are invited to participate in EMPOWER A BILLION LIVES - II
Despite decades of efforts by governments, NGOs and the private sector, around 700 million people in
the world today still live with no access to electricity, and 3 billion live with energy poverty so severe
that it impacts their lives and livelihood. Climate change, and new technologies, such as solar and EVs,
could widen the gap between haves and have-nots even more. However, 21st century technologies also
hold the promise of scalable solutions to energy access that are clean, affordable and equitable. We are
looking for passionate, enthusiastic and talented people and teams to come together and develop
effective scalable solutions to energy access.
Building on the success of Empower a Billion Lives - I
(EBL-I), IEEE PELS has launched EBL-II. EBL-I was held in
2019 and attracted over 450 teams from 70 countries.
Five regional competitions (China, India, Africa, Europe
and US) were held, with field demonstrations in Nepal,
Rwanda, Uganda, Malaysia, Madagascar, India, China,
Tanzania, Nigeria, Cambodia, Singapore, Kenya & Ivory
Coast, with a global final in Baltimore in Oct 2019.
You can participate in Empower a Billion Lives - II, a global biennial competition on energy access, and
become a part of creating such transformative solutions. These solutions need to build on technical,
business and regional knowhow, and should propose, demonstrate, field-test and validate their
solutions - thus reducing technical and market risk, and accelerating time to scale and impact.
Innovation can be in any area, including technology, business model or use of novel social networking
aspects to get to scale and impact quickly.
Teams are invited from across the globe and from all walks of life, including companies, research
organizations, entrepreneurial startups, as well as student teams from colleges and universities.
Participating in EBL-II is easy. Log on to www.empowerabillionlives.org and register your team. Review
the requirements on the website and submit a brief 3-page Concept Paper in the required format by Nov
30, 2021. The selection process will lead to field trials and the EBL-II Global Final, which is scheduled for
Oct. 2022. EBL-I awarded over $500,000 in prizes and financial support to the teams.

Solutions presented by the teams included microgrids,
nanogrids, solar home systems, improved business
models, and appliances. Over $500,000 was provided
in awards and team support, including a $100,000
Grand Prize to team SoULS from IIT Bombay. Other
global winners include XPower, Reeddi, Entrepreneurs
du Monde and Okra, SolarWorx and Havenhill Synergy.
