as far as VVC is concerned. Third,
PV inverters are not utility-owned
assets, and regulatory mechanisms
for allowing utility access to the vars
generated are still in flux. Finally, using inverter vars to support the grid
may result in lost revenues for the PV
system owner. To tackle this last issue, the PV inverter manufacturers
are even thinking of overrating their
smart inverters by 10-15% to keep the
real power rating the same as before,
but this leads to an increased overall
cost of the equipment.
We do agree that PV inverters
can play an important role in the
overall grid volt-var control. However, for the utility to preserve its VVC
benefits, it is important that precise
control of voltages and vars all along
a distribution feeder be realized.
With the current technology, this results in inverters fighting each other
or operating with broad Q-V droop
bands, and precise voltage control
is lost. We have shown in our article
the ability to operate about 100 fast
autonomous var injection devices to
realize "zero-droop voltage control"
at multiple points along a feeder so
that PV hosting is increased and utility VVC benefits are preserved.
