Conclusions

About the Authors

This article presents a named pipe-based PIL platform for
basic as well as complex PE circuits and motor drives. The
system integrates the SE, autocode generation, MCU hardware, and communication between them and presents a
complete solution that facilitates rapid design and prototyping of complex control algorithms.
The PIL approach provides a safe debugging environment,
better quality control, and failure analysis. It helps verify the
control system code through a simple MCU kit. The control
algorithms can be validated on a high-speed MCU, eliminating the need for the real hardware during the development
phase. Therefore, it allows eliminating the risk of damaging
any real or expensive hardware. It also helps in detecting any
platform-specific problems and casting errors and allows
for the testing of the control algorithm in isolation from the
power stage, all at a fraction of the cost of the conventional
HIL systems. The accuracy of the PIL simulations is verified
by comprehensive testing, with the results being compared
to both the SIL and HIL simulations. Results obtained prove
the versatility and the robustness of the PIL system.

Harsh Vardhan (Harsh.Vardhan@utdallas.edu) received
his bachelor of engineering degree in electronics and
communications engineering from Manipal University,
Karnataka, India, in 2010 and his M.S. degree in electrical
engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2014.
He was the first recipient of the prestigious Indian Student Alumni Association Scholarship at the University of
Texas. He has been a research assistant with the Department
of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas since 2014. His research interests include power electronic applications of embedded systems, simulation techniques in power electronics, and programming in low-level
hardware environments.
Bilal Akin (bilal.akin@utdallas.edu) received his B.S.
and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Middle East
Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, in 2000 and 2003,
respectively, and a doctorate in electrical engineering from
Texas A&M University, College Station, in 2007. He was an
R&D engineer with Toshiba Industrial Division in Houston,
Texas, from 2005 to 2008. From 2008 to 2012, he worked as
