capacity, energy storage, and CO2 production. Power-electronics interfaces
between the different energy grids
and assets enable technology to link
them together efficiently. For optimal
integration of these different grids, we
foresee entire solid-state (in place of
electromagnetic and electromechanical) conversion, control, and protection take place within each grid in the
future. This goal will take decades to
implement, but piecemeal efforts to
modernize the grid need to be aligned
with such a long-term goal. Some of
the short-term challenges to integrate
modernization into a legacy and aging
grid will be a very important task for
power and power-electronics engineers over the next two decades.

An Integrated Electric Grid
For grid integration, the electrical component will have a
large number of power-electronics- and communications-

based resources that use distributed intelligence in the
process (Figure 2). Distributed energy resources
(DERs) are currently being integrated into the grid at an
accelerating rate. Distributed solar, with competitive
