the 2017 "Power technology roadmap":
Empowering the Electronics Industry
E
very two years, the Power
Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) publishes its
"Power Technology Roadmap" (PTR).
The most recent road map report was
formally released at the Applied
Power Electronics Conference and
Exposition (APEC) 2017 in Tampa,
Florida, during 26-30 March. In his
plenary presentation at APEC, PTR
Cochair Conor Quinn noted two
themes that became evident during
the compilation of this year's road
map. The first is the continuing smaller, faster, cheaper mantra associated
with most technology progression,
which captures how, for many years,
our industry has operated in a technology-responsive manner. But he
also identified a new and interesting
theme in this year's PTR: that power
electronics technology has emerged,
or, should we say, re-emerged, as an
enabling technology in its own right.
In other words, a large part of our
industry is now shaping the technology for the electronics industry. Examples include the technology behind
electric vehicles, alternative energy
converters, and energy harvesting
devices. Hence the tagline for this
PTR edition: "Empowering the Electronics Industry."
but it has always tried to provide multidimensional perspectives on power
technology growth and trends. While
major product segments have been
addressed from the beginning, the
products themselves have changed.
Commentaries on "Application Trends"
and "Emerging Technologies" were
added in 2011 and 2013, respectively. A
webinar series was added during the
development of the 2013 edition. Available to PSMA and non-PSMA members alike, the webinars offer timely
information and facilitate interesting
discussions between attendees of
diverse backgrounds.
In this edition, a new section
called "Component Technologies"
has been added (Figure 1). It is widely
recognized that the growth in power
technology is strongly impacted by
the growth (or lack thereof) of underlying component technologies. In
prior road maps, the component
angle was covered through the webinars. But now it is hoped that the
addition of this new section will provide further insights and value to the
readers by giving this topic area more
dedicated focus.
The overall structure of this year's
PTR largely follows the format of and
keeps the improvements made in the
2015 report. It offers a consolidated
view of the latest trends in power management, power control, and power
