capabilities, a reputation that allows
you to call upon others and encourages others to want to call upon you.
Those connections can be valuable
through your career as you transition

jobs due to technology, marketplace,
and personal life changes. Dr. Butler,
quoting the TI chief executive officer, said "luck is when preparedness
meets opportunity" and noted that,
to be lucky, you must become known
for being prepared for a variety of opportunities and delivering on your
commitments. To grow your technical skill set, utilize IEEE resources as
well as massive open online courses.
She stressed that these recommendations should be engaged while you

are still in college, and they should be
continued throughout your career.
Dr. Butler also emphasized that influence management is required to be a
technical leader, and activities like
volunteering in the IEEE will help
develop influence skills. She concluded her talk by saying that the real
way to gain and stay in power is by
volunteering to move the electrons.
In other words, give power to others
through volunteering, mentoring, and
community services.
