There is an art to using foil conductors in the vicinity of gaps in a magnetic core, which involves tradeoffs that
are qualitatively evident to a specialist
in the design of electromechanical
objects. Prof. Sullivan has evidently
provided some useful quantitative
guidance that Lundquist has successfully applied to the example. Overall,
the process described was indicative
of engineering practices in the era
before ubiquitous computers and offthe-shelf software. In this instance, the
process appears to be appropriate and
productive. Given the complex, multidimensional nonlinearities described
by Prof. Sullivan, as well as the relatively small size of the industry that is
unlikely to produce fully characterized
materials in the near future, this may

still be the way of the future, at least
for now.

Cutting Down Parasitic
Capacitances
The title of Dr. Ray Ridley's presentation was simply "Winding Capacitance." Like many of the speakers at
this session, Dr. Ridley is well known
to many in this community. Just viewing his presentation charts on the conference memory stick told a direct and
reasonably complete story; the accompanying narrative provided a much
richer context. According to the speaker, it is commonplace for a consultant
to confer on a project that should be
complete, particularly when a product
does not meet an electromagnetic
interference (EMI) specification. The
answer is frequently a reduction in
parasitic capacitances in the windings.

The presentation showed good and
bad examples, and in every case, the
good examples were superior from
first-principle considerations and had
a very minor impact on the rest of the
design (except, of course, for increasing the probability of passing the EMI
test). Evidently, these techniques were
well known at least from the earliest
days of the vacuum-tube era of radio
communications. Unlike the overall
electromagnetic design of an inductor or a transformer, it would seem
that electrostatic design would be
something where substantial progress
could be made in applying inexpensive
computing power to the process. The
nonlinearities that might be present
in the underlying physics are not as
dominant, and while the geometries involved are not trivially simple, they appear to be well within the capabilities
