On the magnetics front, Bourns, Inc. presented a paper in
industry session #IS18 on high flux density nanocrystalline
materials for high-frequency power applications, which was
jointly presented with Tyndall National Institute of Ireland.
According to Bourns, new core material is aimed at enabling
more compact high-power inductor designs that offer stable
inductance values, minimal core losses, and improved performance for high frequency-switching dc-dc converters.
This paper explained the results of the initial characterization of the newly developed nanocrystalline material, showing
improved performance over existing high-frequency materials regarding saturation flux density, materials loss density,
permeability, and cost. However, for optimal results, the work
indicated that the magnetic annealing procedure has to be optimized based on microstructure and the dc and ac magnetic
properties of ribbons. In short, the paper, written jointly by
Cathal Sheehan, A. Masood, Z. Pavlovic, H.A. Baghbaderani,
P. Stamenov, and P. McCloskey, demonstrated that soft magnetic
ribbon derived from the new nanocrystalline material offered
higher permeability than nickel-iron alloy cores with similar
anisotropy field to power cores and lower coercivity at 1 MHz.
TT Electronics released the HA74 series of surface-mount
power inductors with AEC-Q200 certification for operation
from −55 to 155 °C. These high-power components combine
a low profile, small footprint, and 3 MHz of switching capability for efficient, space-saving dc-dc converters. With op12:47
erating temperatures from −55 to 155 °C, the HA74 series
is ideal for automotive applications, including the latest generation of high-density converters and pi filters for advanced
driver-assistance system controllers. Leveraging the compact
5.5 mm # 5.5 mm footprint, with current ratings up to 2.9 A
and dc resistance down to 74 mΩ, the HA74 series enables high
power density and energy efficiency. With 3 MHz switching capability of these compact inductors, allowing their use in highfrequency converter designs, they are the ideal companion to
small, high-frequency filter capacitors and help minimize module size and weight. Inductance values range from 4.7 to 33 μH.
Coilcraft unveiled its new XGL4020 series of high-performance, molded power inductors, featuring the industry's lowest
dc losses and extremely low ac losses for a wide range of dc-dc
converters, switching from hundreds of kilohertz up to 5 plus
MHz. Additional performance improvements include a wider
range of inductance values and improved I rms current ratings.
Available in 12 inductance values, from 0.33 to 8.2 µH,
with current ratings up to 15.2 A and soft saturation characteristics, the series offers the lowest dc resistance currently available in the market (up to 45% lower than Coilcraft's next-lowest soft-saturation products). The lower dc
resistance and higher I rms also allow the XGL4020 to operate
much cooler than other components.
Additionally, XGL4020 series inductors are qualified to
