O
n 1 March 2019, Prof. Vassilios G. Agelidis from Denmark Technical University,
(DTU), Kongens Lyngby, presented a
Distinguished Lecture at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering
in Thiruvananthapuram, India, on
the topic of large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity grid integration (FigureĀ 1). In his talk, he
explained why renewable energy
sources are not stable and that
more reliable methods are needed,
emphasizing developing more than
100% renewable energy. He also
explained inertia's effect on the
dynamic performance of wind turbines, the need to stabilize grids,
and uses for off-grid energy-harnessing methods.
Prof. Agelidis classified uncertainty as the major challenge for
renewable energy sources and addressed other related challenges.
He suggested using electric vehicles
(EVs) as mobile power storage to
eliminate the need for costly stationary grid storage for energy from renewable sources. He also suggested
using synergies by integrating different energy sources.
Most of the EVs are autonomous,
such as electric cars made by Tesla.
