According to Micro-Tech Consultants founder Mohan
Mankikar, "The power supply industry has many opportunities in emerging mobile and LED markets that need
compact high-density products with high efficiency at
relatively low prices. The challenging part will be a compromise between technology development associated with
commercial success."
Speaking of emerging applications, which include tablet PCs, smartphones, LED lighting, and data center servers, the IHS report shows that the emerging applications
account for only ~25% of the total power supply market. The
growth rate for the emerging applications is projected to be
high, averaging ~30%. Large traditional markets, such as the
industrial and telecommunications markets, will continue

while captive supplies will account for 31%. The consulting
firm projects a five-year growth rate of 2.2% for this category
of power supplies (Figure 2).
Likewise, separating the ac-dc switchers from dc-dc
converters, the study shows that in 2013, the estimated
global market for ac-dc switchers (merchant + captive) was
US$22.847 billion and dc-dc converters (merchant + captive)
represented US$6.327 billion. While the projected CAGR rate
for ac-dc switchers for the next five years is 1.9%, the dc-dc
products will see only 0.9% growth in the next five years.
Of the total, the market watcher estimates the global
consumption of merchant ac-dc switchers to
be worth US$16.954 billion in 2013 versus only
US$2.727 billion for merchant dc-dc converters.
