IEEE Power Electronics Magazine - March 2014 - 46

In the last century, silicon semiconductors transformed computing
and the communication and energy
industries, giving consumers and
businesses more powerful devices
that were once unimaginable. Today,
as we reach the limits of silicon-based
electronics for some critical applications, wide-bandgap semiconductors
offer a new opportunity to jump-start
the next generation of smaller, faster,
cheaper, and more efficient power

electronics for personal devices, electric vehicles, renewable power interconnection, industrial-scale variablespeed drive motors, and a smarter,
more flexible grid.
The institute will provide shared
facilities, equipment, and testing and
modeling capabilities to companies
across the power electronics supply chain, particularly small- and
medium-size manufacturers, to help
invent, design, and manufacture new

semiconductor chips and devices. The
institute will also pair chip designers
and manufacturers with large power
electronic manufacturers and suppliers, such as John Deere and Delphi,
to bring these technologies to market
faster. It will offer training, higher
education programs, and hands-on
internships that give American workers the skills for new job opportunities and meet the needs of this emerging and globally competitive industry.

IEEE Transportation Electrification
Conference and Expo Highlights

T

he IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and
Expo (ITEC) is a global brand
to lead a major initiative within the
IEEE on transportation electrification. Its definition of transportation
electrification is comprehensive and
includes the electrification of both
propulsion and nonpropulsion systems. Electrified vehicles include
more-electric vehicles (MEVs), hybrid
electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in
hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles
(EVs). The electrification level,
defined as the percentage of the vehicle's electric power to its total power,
varies from less than 10% in MEVs to
100% in EVs. ITEC is at the intersection of all types of electrified transportation, from land vehicles, including heavy-duty, rail, and off-road vehicles, to airplanes and ships. It is a
very unique conference and exhibition focused on what industry and its

customers need and desire. It has an
educational boot camp and a comprehensive tutorials and papers section
with active industry interest and participation. In addition, ITEC has a
large industry exhibition focused on
components, subsystems, and systems for all types of electrified vehicles and transportation systems.
ITEC is an excellent conference
with a very comprehensive program
that is exceptionally attractive to
industry, government agencies,
and the general public, in addition
to academic researchers, students,
and educators. ITEC includes an
Educational EV/HEV Boot Camp
with parallel short courses offered
by internationally renowned industry experts. In addition, ITEC
includes an all-star group of keynote presenters covering the current status and future trends in

transportation electrification. The
program also includes state-of-theart tutorials and panel discussions
as well as numerous high-quality
technical paper presentations.
The ITEC Steering and Organizing Committees-with the active
participation of over 80 individuals, mostly from the industry-have
been working hard to organize this
excellent technical conference for
you. Because of their dedication and
countless hours of work, ITEC's strategic and business plan, and the leadership of the IEEE Power Electronics
Society, IEEE Industry Applications
Society, and Power & Energy Society, ITEC has quickly become the
premier global technical event for
transportation electrification. ITEC
was very successfully launched in
2012 with over 500 attendees (over
50% from industry).
The 15 panel presentations covered a broad range of topics in the
field of transportation electrification
(100 panel presenters, 70% of them
