IEEE Power Electronics Society
Looks Forward to Big Things

W

ith 2013 behind us, I am
writing this article to celebrate a phenomenal year
and welcome an even more exciting
new year. The biggest event for the
IEEE Power Electronics Society
(PELS) in 2013 was the celebration of
its 25th anniversary as a technical
Society. We designed a unique anniversary logo for our Web site and for
all our publications as well as special,
dedicated souvenirs for our members.
There was a reception to honor our
long-time volunteers in leadership
roles. A special presentation at the
2013 IEEE Energ y Conver sion
Congress and Exposition (ECCE)
Wednesday night social (Figure 1)
with all of our members culminated with all of the PELS past presidents present for the cake cutting
that celebrated the Society's 25th
anniversary. All of the past PELS
presidents are shown with me as
the current IEEE president in Figure 2. This is a rare moment in our
Society's history, when all of our
past presidents converged together.

impact in the field in a short time. In
August 2013, it secured the seventh,
ninth, and 11th slots in IEEE Xplore's
top 100 downloads list. IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics had a total
of five top downloads: numbers 34, 52,
76, 77, and 88.
During the June 2013 IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) meeting, we
obtained TAB approval for our Phase 2
proposal to transfer our long-time
newsletter into a formal magazine with
achievable value. Special thanks must
go to Babak Fahimi for his work in preparing both the Phase 1 and Phase 2
proposals for the approval process and
for his service as our editor-in-chief

for the newsletter. Our new magazine is called IEEE Power Electronics
Magazine. In December, we appointed
Editor-in-Chief (EiC) Ashok Bindra.
Ashok's appointment represents PELS'
determination to make this new magazine unique and to serve all our members, both in industry as well as in the
academia. Ashok will be assisted by
two deputy EiCs: Ira Pitel and John
Shen. The editorial board will be
advised by an ad hoc committee on
industry participation, headed by Ira.
The magazine is published quarterly
and is being launched in March at the
2014 Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC).

Promising Publications
It was a banner year for our publications, too. In June, we launched our
brand-new journal-IEEE Journal
of Emerging and Selected Topics in
Power Electronics (JESTPE).
JESTPE has already made its
Digital Object Identifier 10.1109/MPEL.2014.2301211
