meantime, after several failed funding pitches, the I-Corps program was
announced at UCF.

Joining the I-Corps Programs
In Jan. 2015, I formed a team to enter
the competition to qualify for the new
I-Corps program being launched at
UCF. We called our team The eBook
Platform Team. Through a competitive process, we were selected and
became one of the first cohort teams
at UCF I-Corps. The idea we pitched
to the I-Corps selection committee
focused on establishing a business
that delivers a highly interactive, adaptive, and integrated technical ebook
platform for science and engineering
education courses.
The I- Cor ps tea ms a re generally comprised of three people: (1)

	

Entrepreneurial Lead, typically a postdoctoral researcher or a student who
possesses relevant technical knowledge and a commitment to innovation,
(2) Principal Investigator, typically assigned to a faculty member who serves
as the technical lead and project manager with an understanding of the science and limitations of the technology,
and (3) Industry Mentor, a seasoned
entrepreneur or business executive
with more than 10 years of industry
experience. The eBook Platform Team
consisted of me as the principal investigator, two graduate students, and an
industry mentor.
In the subsequent column (Part-II
of the case study), I will address my
team's experience in going through
the I-Corps program and draw a summary of the lessons learned.

About the Author
Issa Batarseh (issa.batarseh@ucf
.edu) received his B.S. degree in electrical and computer engineering and
his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of
Illinois, Chicago, IL 60607, United
States in 1983, 1985, and 1990, respectively. He is currently a professor of
electrical engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Central Florida,
Orlando, FL 32816, United States. He
is the founder of two startups in
power electronics, Petra Systems and
ApECOR, and is a member of the
National Academy of Inventors. Plus,
he has been inducted into the Florida
Inventors Hall of Fame. He is a Fellow
of the IEEE.
