■ dynamic voltage control at the LV side and disturbance
compensation caused by non-linear loads;
■ full control of each individual phase and simple islanding
mode of operation;
■ communication with other elements of the power system
(data exchange with other devices, which causes fast
control of the energy flow, reconfiguration of the power
grid at failure).
Regarding privacy and security in the TE systems, regulation
frameworks are established in the US by the National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST11). NISTIR
8259A establishes a cybersecurity feature baseline for scalable
IoT devices. European Telecommunications Standards
Institute ETSI12 is recognized by the European Commission
for developing standards for the ICT within Europe. They
have considered many of the same themes of NISTIR 8259A
that require security features such as the updatability of
software/firmware and ensure the integrity of the software,
which will require a secure boot and secure update of firmware
of embedded devices. In Europe, there are common
criteria defined by ISO 15408, which give a testing framework
for testing labs to be applied for measuring Protection
Profiles. Another organization that has recently tackled Protection
Profiles [40] is the ioXt Alliance13. This is a non-profit
organization whose main promoter members are Amazon,
Comcast, Google, Legrand, Resideo, Silicon Labs, T-Mobile,

and the ZigBee Alliance. Other notable members include
Somfy, Z-Wave, mobilities, NXP, Accuity Brands, Cree Lighting,
Schneider Electric, MMB Networks, and Logitech.
Summary
Power systems and all the key stakeholders are facing
increasing challenges due to novel operational, regulatory,
and business models. New paradigms, such as TE, pose
additional technical challenges throughout the entire
power system value chain. These challenges cover several
domains, from distribution to consumer, facing new technical
concepts on several devices, ranging from end-user
devices to high level smart transformers. This paper has
addressed the challenges that power electronics devices
are facing while adopting the TE paradigm. New architectures
presented for building level ERs are well adapted to
the all-new set of functions enabled by this new generation
of power devices. At the distribution level, adaptation
of the new smart transformer concept acting as smart
hubs will lead to a true smart electrical system enabling
the full potential of Transactive Energy.
