During this time, Freeman was
credited with several patents associated with battery gauging and fastcharging techniques, monitoring battery state of charge, a method and
apparatus to measure light intensity,
and many more. In addition, there are
many other patents issued to TI based
on Freeman's work in TI's Kilby Labs
and digital power group.
As a knowledgeable expert in the
field, Freeman presented talks and
papers at major conferences around
the world, including in the United
States, Europe, China, and Japan. He
also wrote many technical articles in
trade publications.
Freeman was instrumental in
starting TI's digital power development where products were developed
for the digital control of power technology that intelligently monitors
and controls power supplies used in
end equipment, such as computing,
servers, and telecommunications systems. In this role, he defined and developed specialized microcontroller
peripherals that are optimized for
power applications to digitally control
and manage power systems. To focus
more on advanced power technology
development, Freeman helped estab-

lish TI's Power and Energy Systems
Lab within TI's Kilby Research Laboratories. He earned a B.S. degree in
physics from Midwestern University.
Freeman is survived by his loving
wife of 37 years, Cynthia; daughters,
Cassiopeia Freeman, Cassandra Edwards and her husband John, and
Andromeda Freeman; grandchildren,
Jacob Edwards and Elijah High;
mother, Shirley Freeman; brothers,
Ronnie Freeman and his wife Donna,
Mike Freeman and his wife Kelly; sisters, Theresa Lo Bue and her husband
Mike, Brenda Freeman, Lisa Freeman
Dotson, and Laura Freeman and her
husband James; mother-in-law, Ruby
Selvidge; brother-in-law, Kevin Selvidge and his wife Melanie; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and
extended family and friends.

Istaván Nagy
On 6 July, Prof. Istaván Nagy, a
research professor at Budapest University of Technology, passed away in
Budapest, Hungary, at the age of 84,
after a courageous struggle against
cancer. Nagy conducted early research
on excitation systems of turbine generators that fueled the development of
four generations of large excitation

systems for electric power plants in his
home country and much of central and
eastern Europe. His department at the
Research Institute of Automation and
Computation jointly with another
department in Budapest developed a
fully automatic fuel handling system
for nuclear power plants. Under his
direction, his department also developed high-frequency inverters used in
induction heating, single- and threephase uninterruptible power supplies,
and inverter-fed drives.
Currently, his research team is
involved in environmentally friendly
power production, specifically the
efficient use of waste and renewable
energies, including solar energy. An
IEEE Fellow, Nagy held 13 patents
and published over 250 papers. He
was a recipient of the Szechenyi Prize,
the highest-ranking award in science
in Hungary.

Christopher Riddleberger, David Freeman, and Istaván Nagy will surely be
missed. Our sincerest condolences go
to the families of these three dedicated power electronics experts.
