off-the-shelf control ICs available. The board is designed
to be a demonstration board, rather than a space/density-optimized reference design. For example, all active
components are SMT on the bottom side, and no heatsink is used. An optimized board could replace the four
SMT bridge diodes with a single though-hole, single inline package or place the powertrain on a small fourlayer daughtercard and convert the main PCB to a costoptimized version. With this design, a power density of
+14 W/in 3 is achieved, in line with benchmark Si-based

examples today. Customer designs are expected to
achieve +24 W/in 3 -around two times the best-in-class
adapter power density today.
The PFC section (see Figure 6 for schematic and
switching waveforms) uses a standard STMicroelectronics L6562A eight-pin control IC, powering a single GaN power IC directly. Critical-mode PFC (also
known as boundary-mode) has a nominal switching
frequency at full load (and a specific ac input line
voltage). With the L6562A, as the power is reduced,
