IEEE Power Electronics Magazine - September 2017 - 63
convener of this year's conference and
the technical director at Telepower
Australia, provides the following nar-
rative in support of this choice:
The reality of the world is the
energy (electricity) demand to
supply ICT services is increas-
ing. This is new energy con-
sumption, and outstrips much of
the gains from energy efficiency
effort. DC systems are generally
efficient anyway, compared to
ac systems. In telco and data
center environments, the power
electronic converters are al -
ready operating at efficiencies in
the mid to high 90% range, so
there is not much room for
reduction in consumption.
For large installations, there
is a move from the traditional
48 V to 400-Vdc distribution as an
efficiency saving. This has creat-
ed opportunities for the research
and development of higher-
voltage rectifiers and dc-dc
converters, but also has created
system and architecture design
challenges. It takes innovation to
best shift to new voltage-level
platforms and optimize the use
of existing plant and infrastruc-
ture. An increasing component
energy demand in ICT energy
infrastructure also comes from
cooling, and inventive thinking is
needed to drive reductions in
cooling energy demands.
Beyond this, INTELEC is
targeting nontraditional com-
mu nication system operators.
Mission-critical, high-speed
sophisticated communication
networks are now operated
both on- and off grid by railway
companies, mining companies,
and oil and gas operators. There
is novelty and innovation to
bring to the INTELEC table with
these "new" groups of end users.
For INTELEC 2017, there is a focus
on energy storage to augment renew-
able energy, abate grid consumption,
and facilitate reliable remote area ICT
supply. With regards to thermal en-
vironment design, the conference ad-
dresses the issues of increased cooling
energy consumption.
Papers for INTELEC 2017 have
been solicited and selected using a
blind peer-review and scoring pro-
cess like that used for INTELEC
2016, which resulted in high-quality
content. The overall structure of the
technical program will be similar to
previous years, with some important
new initiatives. Educational tutori-
als will be held Sunday, 22 October.
There will be a welcome reception
on Sunday evening (following the tu-
torials), an exhibitor's reception on
Monday evening, and a conference
