n September 2016, the IEEE Indus-
trial Electronics Society (IES)/
IEEE Industry Applications Soci-
ety (IAS)/IEEE Power Electronics
Society (PELS) North Italy Joint
Chapter hosted Distinguished Lec-
tures presented by Prof. Dr.-Ing.
Ralph Kennel (Figure 1) and Dr. Mo-
Yuen Chow.
Prof. Kennel's Lectures at
the University of Padova and
Politecnico di Torino
Prof. Kennel's lecture, "Predictive
Control: The Powerful Method to
Control Power Converters and Drives
in the Future," took place at the Uni-
versity of Padova on 13 September
2016. This event was a collaboration
between the IES/IAS/PELS North
Italy Chapter and the Electrical
Drives Laboratory of the Industrial
Engineering Department at the Uni-
versity of Padova. The Ph.D. degree
students, master's degree students,
and faculty members in attendance
learned about predictive control,
including the basic concepts and
ideas, different types of predictive
controllers, and detailed examples of
predictive controllers.
Prof. Kennel concluded his pre-
sentation by pointing out the success
of the 2015 Symposium on Predic-
tive Control of Electrical Drives and
Power Electronics (PRECEDE) on
predictive control. He encouraged at-
tendance at PRECEDE 2017 in Pilsen,
Czech Republic, which was held 4-6
September 2017. PRECEDE is an au-
thoritative scientific meeting in the
field of predictive control in electric
drives and power electronics and is

chair of the 2017 event.
Prof. Kennel's second lecture,
"Encoderless Control of ac Drives,"
took place on 16 September 2016 at
the Politecnico di Torino. This event
was a collaboration between the IES/
IAS/PELS North Italy Chapter and
the Power Electronics, Electrical Ma-
chines and Drives laboratory of the
Politecnico di Torino. Ph.D. degree
and master's degree students, faculty
members, and industry engineers at-
tended this event.
Prof. Kennel's research activities
cover the traditional field of electri-
cal drive systems and also sensorless
and encoderless control of electric
drives, the predictive control of power
converters, and hardware-in-the-loop
power electronics systems. Through
his wide range of teaching and lec-
turing topics, Prof. Kennel's position
as chair of the Electrical Drive Sys-
tems and Power Electronics at the
Electrical and Computer Engineer-
ing Department of the Technische

Universtät München, Germany, pro-
vides a solid base for forward-looking
training in system engineering and
drive technology.
After completing his graduate study
at the University of Kaiserslautern,
Prof. Kennel completed his doctorate
in 1984. He held several positions at
Robert Bosch GmbH until 1999. From
1994 to 1999, he was also a visiting
professor at the University of Newcas-
tle-upon-Tyne, England. After that, he
held the chair of Electric Machines
and Drives at Bergische Universität
Wuppertal. In 2008, he was appointed
full professor in the Electrical and
Computer Engineering Department
at Technische Universität München.
He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, an
Institution of Engineering and Tech-
nology fellow, a chartered engineer in
the United Kingdom, and a member
of the EPE Association and the VDE
(Kurpfalz district).
Dr. Mo-Yuen Chow's Lecture in Pisa
Dr. Mo-Yuen Chow, IEEE Fellow,
director of the Advanced Diagnosis,
Automation, and Control (ADAC) Lab-
oratory at the Electrical and Comput-
er Engineering Department, North
Carolina State University at Raleigh,
was invited by the Italy Section Joint
Chapter IES13/IAS34/PELS35 to deliver
a Distinguished Lecture at the Depart-
ment of Information Engineering,
University of Pisa, Italy, on 26 October
2016 (Figure 2). The lecture, "Collab-
orative Distributed Control on Smart
Micro-Grid Energy Management," was
organized by Dr. Federico Baronti,
chair of the Energy Storage Technical
Committee of the IEEE IES.
