ceremony. PELS staff members Becky
Boresen and Alicia Tomaszewski
planned the 14 June event.
Hurley kicked off the ceremony
by welcoming approximately 40
guests to the dedication ceremony
on behalf of PELS, followed by an
introductory talk from Dhurjaty.
Expressing his deep appreciation
for the Milestone, Dhurjaty praised
Hurley's efforts in getting the IEEE
recognition for the SCR invention
and highlighted the foundation laid
by the solid-state SCR for the field
o f p owe r s e m ic onduc t or s a nd
power electronics.
James Mazzarella, chief technology officer at AA TECH, provided
the opening remarks. He described
the history of the plant from its early
GE days to the present. The presence
of GE at the Clyde site continues to
this day because the present firm, AA
TECH, is a joint venture of Parker
Aerospace and GE Aviation. In 1966,
Parker Aerospace opened its factory
in Clyde and purchased the building
from Clyde Industrial Development
Corporation in 1969. The operation
became AA TECH in 2012. Prior to
Parker's arrival, GE produced industrial products in the Clyde factory for
20 years. It was during this period that
the original p-n-p-n switching device
created at Bell Labs led to the invention of the SCR/thyristor at GE. AA
TECH has grown steadily over the
years to its current workforce of 430.
In 2014, the site underwent a major
expansion of its manufacturing facilities, office building, and workforce.
After welcoming the guests, GE Research's Power Electronics Principal
Engineer Ahmed Elasser shed some
light on the development of the SCR/
thyristor at GE and reminded the attendees of the transition from the tubes
(thyratron) era to the solid-state technology (thyristor) era. He indicated how
the three-terminal power p-n-p-n device commercialized by GE as the SCR
in 1957 (later called thyristor) became
the first dominant electronic control device in the power industry and spawned
a new era in power semiconductors.

"Over the years," he said, "the SCR
evolved and led to more advanced and
high-power devices, such as the gate
turn-off thyristor, MOS-controlled
thyristor, triode for alternating current, and the integrated gate-commutated thyristor, which revolutionized
and enabled efficient control of ac
power and electrical machines."

IEEE PELS President Prof. Frede
Blaabjerg also welcomed the guests
on behalf of PELS and stated, "This
is the first Milestone sponsored by
the IEEE PELS." Currently one of the
fastest-growing technical Societies
of the IEEE, PELS has facilitated and
guided development and innovation
in power electronics technology for
