Talk uses a virtual round table of
experts with at least one member from
each chapter. There were six IEEE
PELS SBCs, which included PELS/
Industry Applications Society (IAS)
SBC at Federal University of Paraiba
(UFPB), PELS SBC at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), PELS/IAS
SBC at Federal University of Campina
Grande (UFCG), PELS SBC at Federal
University of Mato Grosso do Sul
(UFMS), PELS SBC at UFSC and PELS
SBC at State University of Campinas.
As per the plan, every month a different
SBC will investigate a different topic
and present the online event with assistance from local SBCs. The topic for
the first Tech Talk event was "Active
Equalization of Lithium-ion Batteries."
This joint webinar in the form of a
round table conversation offered an
opportunity to share the specialists'
knowledge and their research areas
among students and professionals
across Brazil. Active equalization is a
subject that has garnered high interest in the scientific community, and
its application can enable significant
advances in the new generation of
electrical grids.
Besides presenting the history of
the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery, the
webinar discussed equalization techniques, passive and active balancing techniques, and practical experiments conducted in the laboratory.
Interestingly, the event signaled the
start of cooperation between Brazilian PELS SBCs.
Because battery systems are being used as energy storage for distributed generation systems, active
voltage balancing has been gaining importance in research projects
through the country. Voltage balancing is used in battery systems to
avoid aging mechanisms in the cells,
supercharged cells, sub-charged cells,
as well as safety for the maintenance
of the battery systems. Although,
the active voltage method has the
advantage of offering more energy
efficiency for the battery management system (BMS), it is, however,
more complex and expensive. This

Using material from his master's
thesis, Gustavo Costa (Figure 1), an
active member of PELS SBC at
UFSC, presented analysis of market reports for battery materials
and data on active equalization of
batteries. In addition, Costa also
