a wide range of topics across the TCs.
Around 50 judges from academia and
industry have been recruited to review
the submitted videos and score them
according to a rubric. Each submitted
video is expected to receive at least 4
reviews from PELS experts. The judging phase is still ongoing. The aim is to
select five best videos that meet the
criteria, which should be available
soon and prizes will be awarded at the
IEEE Energy Conversion Congress
and Exposition (ECCE) 2020 in
Detroit, Michigan, 11-15 October.
Podcast is a new initiative of PELS
that consists of a series of interviews
with the people behind the magic
of development and innovation in
the power electronics industry. The
much-anticipated Podcast Series
was kicked off in April 2020, starting with the interview of Prof. Alan

Mantooth, past president of PELS
and editor-in-chief of the new IEEE
Open Journal of Power Electronics.
Prof. Mantooth answered rousing
questions regarding the journal
and its mandate. The second podcast
was recorded in May 2020, where
Andrew Daga, CEO of Momentum
Dynamics is inter viewed. In this
interview, Daga touched upon the
prospects of wireless power transfer
and its various applications. Meanwhile, we have just finished recording our third podcast interview with
Professor Dragan Maksimovic in
which he shares a few fascinating
stories about his professional journey in the field of power electronics. Please check the last podcast on

page. The IEEE PELS podcast series
is also available on other subscriber

based video channels such as Apple
TV, IEEE TV, Spotify and Stitcher.
Webinars are a regular feature
in IEEE PELS. The current plan is
to have at least two a month. All
webinars are free for PELS members to attend a nd a lso to v iew/
download at a later date from the
PELS resource center. Please visit
the Webinar tab on the IEEE PELS
webpage to access all past webinars
that are archived in the resource
center. In addition, the Committee
ha s lau nched a new i n itiative to
disseminate knowledge in different
languages. On the morning of July 15
(10 AM, Beijing Time), this initiative was kicked off by the first PELS
Webinar in Chinese by Prof. Jinjun
Liu. More have been planned.

Special Session at IEEE
ECCE 2020
At the upcoming ECCE 2020 in
Detroit, Michigan, 11-15 October, the
Committee is organizing a special session on "Industry vs Academia: which
career path is right for you?". This is
dedicated to young professionals in
power electronics, who face difficulty
in choosing whether to pursue a
career path in industry or academia.
It will explore the necessary competencies and skills needed when pursuing a career in either area. Two
subsections will be organized, which
will present distinguished speakers
and experts from various regions
of the world, who will share their
experience in academia and industry respectively.

Keeping the PELS Day Spirit Alive

n 20 June 2020, the second
IEEE Power Electronics
Society (PELS) Day was
celebrated virtually with high spirit

world. From Brazil to India, Society
members and power electronics
engineers in the local communities
kept the PELS Day spirit alive.

president Prof. Frede Blaabjerg, Aalborg University, Denmark, kicked off
the celebration with a talk on climbing the ladder of leadership with IEEE
