Accelerating the Transition
to Vehicle Electrification
G
lobally, governments are
mandating a switch from
internal combustion engine
(ICE) technology to electric-drive
vehicles in 100s of millions of vehicles
to combat climate change. For example,
on 29 June 2022, the European
Union (EU) agreed to a framework to
eliminate carbon emissions from new
cars and vans by 2035, effectively
removing the ICE option for largescale
auto manufacturers [1]. Automakers
are already moving quickly to
innovate, reduce electric drive costs
and leverage technology to respond
to this new environment.
The
g loba l
t rend towards
increased vehicle electrification creates
significant opportunities for the
power semiconductor industry. There
are opportunities within the powertrain
of the electric vehicle (EV), in
the charging infrastructure including
the on-board charger and wireless
charging, and in advanced battery
technology. A driving goal of the
Power Sources Manufacturers Association
(PSMA) (www.psma.com) is
to improve the knowledge of technological
and other developments related
to power sources and conversion
devices and vehicle electrification
provides an opportunity for PSMA
member companies to align their
product roadmaps to meet the needs
of this industry. In September of 2022,

the PSMA Transportation Electronics
Committee will offer a virtual workshop
focused on the latest technologies
and future trends surrounding
vehicle electrification.
PSMA Vehicle Electrification
Workshop
The September 2022 Transportation
Electronics Committee Workshop will
focus on topics of interest for any
engineer or manager that is involved
in vehicle electrification. This includes
not only those in the automotive
industry, but also those in the off-road
and heavy-duty industries.
Each session will lead off with keynote
speakers and conclude with Q&A
and a roundtable discussion. The first
session keynote will be offered by Kia
Motors with a presentation of the
" Evolution of the EV Market. " There
are two keynotes in the second session;
the first will be offered by the
Department of Energy with an " Overview
of Current EV Charging Projects
Supported by the Department of Energy. "
The second keynote of this session
will be by Oakridge National Laboratory
with a presentation on " Materials to
Help Battery Life. Recycling Trends in
Testing - All Chemistries. "
A wide range of topics will be
addressed by experts in the field,
including the latest technologies in
fast charging and wireless charging,
what to do about high EMI, dc-dc
converter trends, battery testing and
management, and many more topics.

two consecutive Tuesdays, 13 and 20
September, at 9:00 A.M.-2:30 P.M. CDT

Electrification Trend
in Brief
According to the International Energy
Agency (IEA), as the cost of batteries
and EVs falls and charging infrastructure
expands, EV fleets are expanding
at a fast pace in multiple markets [2].
More than 10 million electric cars
were on the roads in 2020 with many
manufacturers predicting a minimum
of 50% of vehicle sales to be electric
by the year 2030 as shown in Figure 1.
The electrification of buses and
heavy-duty truck offerings, including
everything from garbage trucks to
long-haul freight trucks are also
expanding. Proposed government regulations
are further accelerating the
transition to vehicle electrification.
The 'Fit for 55' initiative in the EU
means that all new cars or vans placed
in the market from 2035 onward will
be zero-emission vehicles [3]. Similarly,
the U.S. administration has set a goal
of 50% EV sales by 2030 [4]. With the
