development of the power interface
system between the battery and fuelcell
in the world's first gasoline
reformer based fuel-cell vehicle, demonstrated
by Chrysler Corporation in
1998. He was also the first to define and
publish propulsion strategies for fuelcell
vehicles, which have been used in
many early fuel-cell demonstration
vehicles of General Motors and other
automakers. For on-board power generation,
he proposed novel auxiliary
power unit (APU) strategies for hybrid
vehicles based on Stirling engines and
gas turbines, which were demonstrated
in DOE's PNGV/FreedomCar sponsored
hybrid and fuel-cell vehicle projects.
Plus, he has also worked on solid oxide
fuel-cell based power generation for
automobiles and for large commercial
airplanes.
Working for Rolls-Royce, Prof.
Rajashekara and his team proposed
novel electric propulsion architecture
for large civil aircrafts, which was
published in SAE International
Journal of Aerospace. This article
received the 2012 SAE Charles M.
Manly Memorial Award for the best
technical paper on propulsion architectures
for electric aircraft.
In summary, Prof. Rajashekara
has published more than 250 articles
in international journals and
conference proceedings, coauthored
a book with IEEE Press,
and has written six monographs
and individual chapters for eight
books. He was elected a member
of the U.S. National Academy of
Engineering in 2012, the Indian
National Academy of Engineering
in 2013, and the Chinese National
Academy of Engineering in 2021,
for his contribution to development
of the power conversion systems
in transportation. He was a
recipient of the IEEE Medal for
Environmental and Safety Technologies
(2021), the IEEE Richard
Harold Kaufman Award (2013), and
several other prestigious awards
from IEEE and others.
With those futuristic projects in
the past, he says the next big thing
will be flying cars-and he's all in. If
his track record is proof, it may be
time to look skyward for a parking
spot. He has been a leading proponent
of flying cars and vertical takeoff
and landing (VTOL) vehicles.
While this technology is still in the
early phase of commercial takeoff,
his early ideas on propulsion for flying
cars and VTOL are beginning to
be widely accepted in the industry.
Ten years ago only handful of companies
were working on flying cars.
Now, nearly 100 companies are working
on commercializing these types
of vehicles.
Prof. Rajashekara has been a
member of IEEE PELS since its
founding and continues to serve the
