Corporation, Las Vegas. They shared
the perspective of integrated resort
owner/operator and the criteria they
use when considering the adoption of
new technologies. They also shared
pain points in the industry, i.e., difficulty capturing millennial customers,
managing check in/checkout, and
customizing customer experience. All
of the speakers agreed that E-sports
(playing video games), R-sports (controlling robots/drones), and virtual
reality are huge revenue opportunities
in the hospitality industry that need
additional development.
The Winter School showcased several new consumer technologies with
workshops on rapid development for
Samsung Gear and Oculus Rift virtual
reality, Amazon Alexa voice interface,
Google Home Internet of Things (IoT)
devices, Intel RealSense vision sensor
array, Ollobot Android wheeled chassis,
and BeamPro telepresence system.
Workshops included background on
necessary software development kits,
programming languages, and other
software for each technology as well as a
guided Hello World project covering
the essential skills and knowledge for
developing each platform.
At the end of the week, Winter
School attendees split into teams and
competed in a hackathon sponsored by
Rich Robotics, Las Vegas. Teams synthesized and applied all they had
learned from the speakers, workshops,
and CES field trips to rapidly prototype
a consumer robot with applications for
the hospitality industry. Projects
included a robotic bellhop, an emotion-detecting customer-service robot,
a virtual-reality vacation-planning platform, a robot sports game, a resortmapping robot, and a hotel room
outfitted with IoT devices controlled by
biometrics and direct commands from
wearables. At the end of the hackathon,
participants received feedback from
industry experts, including the RAS
vice president of industry affairs, Prof.
Erwin Prassler. Congratulations to
Kiwon Sohn, Giho Jang, Yoshimaru
Tanaka, and Hyunhee Lee, who were
awarded first place for their resortmapping simultaneous localization and
mapping robot.
