RAM: Did your participation have
an impact on your courses (e.g., participation in specific educational/
university programs or chosen cours es afterward)?
Schrade: Developing this prototype
and participating at the Cybathlon
provided a very special and rewarding experience for the students. They
could face practical engineering challenges, which helped them integrate
theoretical principles and gather
hands-on experience that will guide
them through the rest of their studies
and future careers. We also built up

competence among students and in
the involved laboratories on exoskeletons, which was not there before.
These insights have now transferred
into seminars and lectures at ETH
Zürich, and, thanks to the research
project that is still ongoing, new students are still able to gather experience on the field of wearable robotics,
i.e., more specifically, powered lowerlimb exoskeletons.
RAM: Will any of your local activities
initiated for the Cybathlon continue
(e.g., in terms of commercialization
of technology, another student project, further collaboration with the
pilot)?
Schrade: Building on the momentum we gained during the preparation

for the Cybathlon and in view of a
participation in the next Cybathlon
events, we continue improving the system in collaboration with our pilots
and new partners (see Figure 2).
The VariLeg exoskeleton is now
also being used as a research platform
to investigate the potential benefits of
its unique actuation system, which
enables to vary the stiffness in the knee
joint during gait. This is expected to
ease maneuvering uneven terrain as
well as some of the obstacles. If the
results support this hypothesis, the
technology may one day find its way
into assistive devices in the form of a
novel exoskeleton or a licensed actuation system.

Luckily, this collaboration is still ongoing and prospering, which greatly
benefits the further development of
our exoskeleton.
