A Report on RoboCup 2017

Soccer Division
The soccer division consists of five leagues: the small-size league (SSL), the
middle-size league (MSL), the simulation league (Sim), the standard platform
league (SPL), and the humanoid league
(Humanoid). While the majority of the
other leagues are new, the SSL, MSL,
and Sim leagues have been around since
the first RoboCup in 1997. For a listing
of all of the leagues, see Figure 1. The
first standard platform was the Sony
Aibo (1999-2008), and, since 2008, the
SPL has used the Nao platform (SoftBank Robotics, Tokyo, Japan). The
Humanoid league started in 2002.
The SSL is the league with the maximum ball speed (8 m/s) of all of the
RoboCup soccer leagues. In total,
12 robots quickly move around the
9-m # 6-m field, with centralized control based on the view observed from
the ceiling. One Japanese team called
OP-AmP developed a curved shoot,
which attracted other teams and spectators. Unfortunately, OP-AmP lost to a
German team due to a difference in
basic skills. The champion team was a

oboCup 2017 was held 27-30
July 2017 at Nagoya International E xhibit ion Hall
(Por tmesse Nagoya) and
Takeda Teva Ocean Arena, Nagoya,
Japan. In all, 392 teams from 42 countries and regions all over the world
participated in the competition, while
approximately 130,000 visitors enjoyed
watching RoboCup 2017. In the following sections, a brief report for each
league is given.

Chinese team, SRC, a newcomer with
experienced team members.
The MSL is the league with the largest field (18 m # 12 m), where a game
of five versus five robots is dynamically played (Figure 2). Quick passes to
empty areas often result in strong
shoots into the goal, but the opponent's
goalie keeps its goal well defended.

There are two strong teams: Tech United from TheĀ  Netherlands and Water
from China. Both teams control the
quick pass and shoot very accurately,
and they both attack the opponent with
the ball to steal. The champion team
this year was Water. They showed their
performance in an exhibition game
with humans (RoboCup trustees).
