oday, the Internet has become a resource where human users expect to
find answers. If Web information and services are so useful for human
users, then why not share these resources with autonomous software
and robotic systems? A significant barrier to realizing this goal is the
mismatch in the design and operation of robotic systems when compared to Web-oriented paradigms such as service-oriented computing. In this article, we introduce both developmental and operational paradigms, whereas robots
can be outfitted with Web-oriented software interfaces that give them access to universally standard Web resources.
The Internet is a significant resource for information, communication, and
capabilities. Studies have shown that 79% of all American adults
use the Internet [1]. Of the 79%, using a Web search
engine represents the largest common activity (i.e.,
88%), with the next three highest nonmutually
exclusive activities being searching for driving
directions (86%), searching for health-related
information (83%), and looking for online
information about a service or product
(81%). As such, it can be concluded that
Web capabilities and information have
significant roles in the way in which
humans conduct their day-to-day
routines. Here we ask the question
that if humans rely so much on the
Internet then why can't intelligent
systems (i.e., robots) also use the Web
and its resources in their activities or
routines? Where humans search for
driving directions, unmanned aerial
vehicles will look for telemetry information with respect to their missions.
Where humans communicate through
Facebook, robots can use social networking capabilities to have long-standing communication with other robots and humans.
Traditionally, the Internet has supported
information exchange [23], but in its future evolution, an Internet of things [28] will allow humans
to have access to physical objects through their coordination with robots and intelligent systems. In this article, we
span Internet computing and robotics development domains. However, the definitions of services are closely related. Here, services are defined as
capabilities or functions that can be implemented by humans, modular software
